Tragically, this fixation returns at six. My kids are two years apart and so we’ve been in poop-butt-fart territory for what seems like an eternity. The fact that my son’s almost 8 doesn’t seem to matter when his sister starts in with the potty talk. He’s immediately reduced to hysterics. And she loves it. I’m hoping that by the time they leave for college, they’ll have grown out of it. And for now, I savor the moments that they share a laugh.

I might normally be pleased to hear that my three year-old son is advanced. In this case, I am not! Everything is pxx pxx this and p– p– that these days. I had been sending him to the bathroom and that has been fairly effective at reducing the duration of an outbreak of potty talk but it doesn’t seem to be reducing the frequency. I am going to start practicing The Look. I have a feeling I will need it.

I am so glad to hear it’s a 4 year old thing! My soon-to-be-four son loves the potty talk! The thing that bugs me is that he’s not talking about his body parts, he’s talking about mine! ARRGG!

Thanks for the interesting interview though.

I’ll learn to ignore more often. He already knows I don’t approve of it, nor do I want to hear it.

I love this because I am going through the same thing with my son. He is obsessed with potty talk. At first I thought I’m not going to make it a big deal and it will go away but it is getting worse. I love BBB and have her book. I think I will have to try the talk now. What I find hard is how to handle it when he is with all his friends. That’s when it get’s really bad. Maybe I just need to let him get all the potty talk out when he’s with them.

We’ve got a toilet talker in our house too. The key, I think, is not to laugh (which is hard sometimes because often the word choice is pretty hilarious). The other thing they do at his preschool is say “you can talk all the potty talk you want… in the bathroom! Go on and get in there and get all those words out.”

OK so i have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. Live in Santa Monica and just joined. I am looking forward to the updates. so far we are deep in potty talk with my 4 year old boy and i read the first 4 lines of this and had to stop because i crying laughter. It is me… keep you posted!
